     MEANING OF NEW IN HEBREW

In Hebrew, the main word for "new" is חדש (chadash), meaning fresh, renewed, or rebuilt, stemming from the root meaning to renew; it appears in words like Rosh Chodesh (New Moon) and signifies something restored or different in quality, not just old replaced by something unused, often implying renewal by God.

Key Hebrew words for "New":

  • חדש (Chadesh) (verb):

Means "to renew," "to repair," "to restore," or "to rebuild," often used in a spiritual sense of substantive change, not just superficial alteration.

Nuances of meaning:

  • Renewal vs. Completely New:

Chadash often implies something restored or renewed (like God's mercies each morning) rather than something absolutely new that never existed before.

  • Quality:

It signifies a change in kind or nature, a fresh start, or something superior to the old, as seen in concepts like the "new spirit" or "new covenant" in scripture.

And here is a point to ponder upon:

The word ‘cha•dash’ new, comes from the word ‘cho•desh,’ month. The relationship between the two is obvious if we look at then from astronomical point of view. A new month in the Jewish calendar which is a lunar calendar is marked by the appearance of a new moon after being completely out of sight the night before. Obviously, it is the same moon that was here since the Creation, but still we call it a new moon. Likewise, as we discussed yesterday the New Testament is more so a renewed testament because it has the identical two parties of the old one. The ‘new’ for us is not an absolute ‘new’ since it is not necessarily ‘new’ for God.

This seemingly conflict is well described by Ecclesiastes:

‘That which has been, is what shall be; and that which has been done is what shall be done; and there is nothing new under the sun.’

Ecclesiastes 1:9

It is the time of renewal, revival and restoration. The New Year also brings the cheerful feelings of rejuvenation spiritually, emotionally and physically. We are open to to accept all things new.

‘Hakol chadash’ is a part on the declaration: ‘hi•ne•ni o•se ha•kol cha•dash’ (I am making all things new) that John quotes directly from the Almighty Himself:

‘He who sits on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” He said, “Write, for these words of God are faithful and true.”

Revelation, 21:5

This powerful vision signifies a change of enormous and dramatic magnitude where the new earth and new sky are presented at the same breath with the New Jerusalem:

‘I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth have passed away, and the sea is no more.’

Revelation, 21:1

This declaration of renewal echoes the same promise God Himself made in the Old Testament:

‘For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth; and the former shall not be remembered, nor come to mind. But be glad and rejoice forever in that which I create; for, behold, I create Jerusalem a rejoicing, and her people a joy.’ And I will rejoice in Jerusalem, and joy in my people; and the voice of weeping shall be no more heard in her, nor the voice of crying.’

Isaiah 65:17-19

Lets Look Deeper Into The Meaning...

NEW BEGINNINGS A TEVA -

Ark of Safety

The phrase "Teva Moses that he was placed in" refers to the Hebrew word "Teva" (תבה), meaning an "ark" or "floating basket," which Moses' mother used to save him as a baby by setting him adrift on the Nile River, a concept mirroring Noah's Ark (also called a tevah) and signifying Divine providence for a new beginning for God's people, as per Hebrewversity and Hebrew Word Lessons

Key Details:

  • The "Basket": It wasn't a simple basket, but a papyrus vessel sealed with pitch, a deliberate act of saving Moses from Pharaoh's decree to kill male Hebrew infants.

  • The Hebrew Word "Teva": This specific term links Moses' story to Noah's ark, suggesting both were instruments of God's plan to usher in new eras, notes Hebrewversity and Hebrew Word Lessons.

  • Location: His mother placed him in the reeds by the Nile River, where Pharaoh's daughter found him.

  • Symbolism: The tevah (ark) represents salvation and God's guidance, making Moses a "new Noah" figure leading his people to freedom, according to Hebrew Word Lessons.

  •

THIS BRINGS US TO THIS CULMINATION....

This fact has drawn the attention of some Bible commentators. One of the more interesting interpretations suggests that an ark, unlike a ship or a boat, has no ability to determine the way it goes. The inability to navigate or chart a course means an ark is dependent completely on Divine providence to make sure it will reach its true destiny. This commonality is precisely what Noah’s ark and Moses’ ark (‘basket’) had in common –both were guided by Divine providence to mark the beginning of a new phase in history: the aftermath of the Great Flood and the Exodus of the Children of Israel from Egypt!
